For over 15 years, Helping With Furniture (HWF) has been a beacon of hope in Ottawa, dedicated to supporting individuals and families in need through the provision of essential household items. As a volunteer-run registered charity, HWF plays a crucial role in furnishing homes and changing lives by offering gently-used furniture, household goods, refurbished bicycles, and laptops to those facing adversity.
HWF serves a diverse range of individuals, including refugees, recent immigrants, and those relocating from shelters or leaving abusive situations. Additionally, they extend their assistance to individuals struggling with mental illness or at risk of homelessness. By accepting donations of gently-used items such as couches, chairs, bed frames, mattresses, microwaves, TVs, curtains, and small appliances from the community, HWF ensures that no one is left without the basic necessities needed to create a comfortable home environment.
Operating with efficiency and compassion, HWF operates a free weekly pickup service for furniture donations, ensuring that the process of contributing to their cause is seamless and convenient for donors. They meticulously assemble orders and personally deliver and set up items in the homes of recipients, ensuring that each donation directly benefits those in need.
To receive assistance from HWF, clients must be referred by a caseworker or recognized sponsorship group and meet specific eligibility criteria, guaranteeing that resources are allocated to those who need them most. Donors can easily contribute by booking a pickup through HWF’s website or dropping off accepted items at their warehouse on Wednesdays from 6-9 pm and Saturdays from 10 am-1 pm.
It’s important to note that HWF does not accept certain items such as clothing, large appliances like stoves or washers/dryers, stereos, VCRs, inkjet printers, telephones, bathroom cabinets, blinds with cords, or BBQs. However, they are particularly in need of microwaves, TVs, couches, curtains, bed frames, and mattresses in good condition.
